Ⅰ.Overview

  As the core device of the anaerobic reactor, three-phase separator is mainly used in UASB, EGSB, IC and other anaerobic reactors to separate solid, liquid and gas in the anaerobic reaction, which plays an important role in the normal operation of the sludge bed and in obtaining the good outlet water quality. This device has the following two functions: one is to collect the marsh gas generated in the reaction chamber under the separator; The other is to precipitate the suspended substances above the separator. Because the effect of three-phase separation directly determines the success or failure of the anaerobic process, the design parameters of three-phase separator are very precise. The three-phase separator with good performance is the guarantee of high load and stable operation of UASB, EGSB, IC and other anaerobic reactors.


Ⅱ.Structure

 The three-phase separator mainly consists of the reflector, gas collecting basin, gas collecting pipe and water collecting basin.


Ⅲ. Working Principle

   Anaerobic reaction occurs as wastewater contact with sludge, then the production of marsh gas (The gas contains methane and carbon dioxide) causes perturbation in the sludge bed. Part of the marsh gas produced in the sludge bed attaches to the sludge particles, and the free bubbles and bubbles with sludge particles rise to the top of the reactor. The bubbles rise up with the sludge particles and hit the bottom of the degassing baffle, which makes the bubbles burst and releases the gas. Then, the sludge particles fall down to the sludge bed, and the gas is collected in the gas collecting chamber on the top of the reactor. Liquid with some solids and bio-particles enter into the sedimentation chamber, and they will go back to the sludge bed again after separating from the liquid. The liquid after separating solid and gas continues to rise and flow out from the effluent weir, and finally discharge from the water collecting basin.


Ⅳ.Working Condition

The three-phase separator installed in an anaerobic reactor shall meet the following conditions:

1.The mixture of water and sludge must be separated before entering the settling chamber.

2.The surface load of the sedimentation zone should be below 3.0 m3/(m2*h). Before the mixed liquid enters the sedimentation zone, its flow velocity through the inlet channel should not be greater than the sedimentation speed of granular sludge.

3.Because anaerobic sludge has the property of flocculation. When the liquid flow rises and goes through the sludge layer, it can make it easy to form the sludge layer in the sedimentation zone. The angle of the sloping wall in the sedimentation area should be appropriate, so that the sludge can quickly slide back to the reaction zone and not accumulate on the sloping wall.

4.It is necessary to prevent the gas chamber from producing a large amount of foam; The height of the gas chamber should be controlled to prevent the scum from blocking the outlet pipe. The three-phase separator showed below is an example to illustrate its working principle.

After the mixture of gas, liquid and solid rises into the three-phase separator, when the bubbles touch the baffle board at the bottom of the separator, the gas goes to the gas chamber so that it can be effectively separated from solid and liquid. Some of the sludge separated from the bubbles fall back to the reaction zone under the action of gravity, the other part rises along a narrow passage with the fluid and enters the sedimentation zone. Because there is no bubble in the liquid of the sedimentation zone, the density of the water column above the sludge reflux inlet is higher than that of the water in the reactor, so that the concentrated sludge can return to the reaction zone to achieve the purpose of solid-liquid separation.
